Introduction
The Greenleaf Gallery on Canyon Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico shows the work of local artists, James Malone and Carola Bell, as well as other artists who have lived and worked in northern New Mexico. We seek to be a gallery which stays close to the creative roots and traditions of northern New Mexico, not by promoting a particular genre of art but by focusing on the unique spiritual and aesthetic values New Mexican artists display in their work.
Our gallery is a small, family owned business, a mother and son enterprise, in fact, James Malone was born on Upper Canyon Road. James and Carola have been a part of the Santa Fe artist and cultural community for many years, Carola parents, when they first came out to Santa Fe in the late 1960's, were friends with many of the artists of that time, Georgia O'Keefe, Hyde Soloman, Agnes White, Doug Peterson, etc. An awareness and an appreciation of how these earlier artists lived and worked infuses our current vision of the Greenleaf Gallery. There is a studio quality to our gallery, an easy informality, where art is celebrated as a life process, springing from the ground and sky which give us life and inspire us, rather than a “slick” finished product type of boutique.
Earthy, simple in presentation, focusing on paintings (and sculptures) which allow the viewer to spend time with and absorb the beauty and unique voice of each work, these are our goals.
“All that is visible must grow beyond itself, extend into the realm of the invisible. Thereby it receives its true consecration and clarity and takes firm root in the cosmic order.”
(from the I Ching, or Book of Changes)
